5 Sandwiches You Can Only Enjoy in Albuquerque

This is the growing and evolving list of sandwiches you can’t have anywhere else because they don’t make them anywhere else! Unique combinations, fantastic ingredients and whole lotta Burqueno swag.

Bocadillos

Located just inside the eastern entrance to the Wells Fargo building (one of the tallest and most recognizable structures in Albuquerque) this little café-style gourmet sandwich shop has some of the best Sandwiches in town. Their customer base consists mostly of people who work in the Wells Fargo building and the surrounding Plaza District. The seating is very limited so if you are in a large group, I suggest you order To-Go and go enjoy at a nearby park or plaza. I place them first because of their New Mexico pride.

The Duke City Ruben

Slow roasted corned beef with red cabbage. The bread was toasted and harmoniously buttered. Paired with a side Potato salad it is a delicious and filling lunch. The Slow-roasted corned beef is not greasy so this is a considerable “guilt-free” sandwich.

Frontier

Frontier is known for its trademark burritos and New Mexican platters. Hands down, It is the most Burqueno place in Burque.

Fish sandwich w/ Green Chile & Cheese

But, did you know they have a fish sandwich? Ask for no tartar sauce (because tartar sauce is not Burqueno) and ask for Green Chile and cheese to be added. The result is a “Fiesta Fish” sandwich with the familiar Green Chile flavor and the addictive cheesy texture that only New Mexico can say is proprietary. With the side of Frontier’s fries, this fish sandwich is a must-have while in you’re in town.

Tractor Brewing

Tractor (Wells Park) was open for almost a year and a half before they opened their kitchen and started serving food. They relied on food trucks to feed their hungry patrons. Although food trucks in town are very tasty, it is inconvenient to leave the bar to order food. Now, everyone is glad that Tractor started serving food especially because their food is amazing. They haven’t had a slow night since they announced the kitchen’s grand opening and for good reason.

The Cubano

Slow-roasted pork, ham, swiss cheese, and the chipotle aioli on a French baguette that is pressed to perfection. Pair it with any of their microbrews and this meal “plows” you in all the right places.

Cheba-Hut

Cheba-hut is a Burqueño cliché in the sense that every pot smoker in town hails this as their “spot”. Not going to lie, the sandwiches are very tasty and the staff is very chill. If you can order a “White widow” as a “Pinner” size without cringing, you will enjoy a very delicious and reasonably portioned “toasted” sub.

“Albu-chronic”

Maybe it is not the best pun in the world. However, I’m glad to see a green chile-turkey sandwich have its name be something other than “Albuquerque Turkey”. It’s true, turkey and green Chile go harmoniously well together and yes, I get that “Albuquerque” rhymes with “Turkey”. Everybody gets it. In the case of the “Albu-Chronic”, I can commend the creator of this sandwich for naming their creation creatively and within the spirit of Cheba.

Chumlys Southwestern

It is my first visit to the Green Jeans Farmery. First, I order a “Happy Camper” at Santa Fe Brewing Company while I decide on which place to eat. There is a coffee shop and multiple restaurants in this one of a kind “outlet mall” of local food and drink. My cashier at Chumlys is very charming and funny. Just the kind of person a business wants making the very first impression on a brand-new customer.

Turkey Sandwich

Turkey, Green Chile, provolone, and avocado. The popularity of turkey and green chile sandwiches is apparent. Also apparent is my appetite for them. The best part of this sandwich is that it is unique to the beautiful and novel Green Jeans Farmery. Enjoy it with a beer from one of the best breweries in the state. Then, follow it up with some coffee desert from the coffee shop.

The list continues to grow as I discover more sandwiches that are worthy of the title. However, If you live in town and have enjoyed a great sandwich that I don’t mention here, leave a comment with the name of the place and name of the sandwich.

  1. Ohhh, yes, I had the Albu-chronic and I thought I died and went to heaven. It’s their grill, or something, because I’ve never had turkey so deliciously moist like that. AND, not sorry that I had to try it because it had the word chronic in it. That’s just too radical not to! 🤘
