I wait a short 20 minutes for a table. Lawrence, the owner, who’s family has owned and operated this restaurant since 1977 calls my name to be seated and welcomes me kindly. I can tell this guy is passionate about his family business and his humility and down-to-earth demeanor mirrors the vibe of this place. He asks “You never been here and you’re from albuquerque?.. you’re in for a treat” He was not kidding. The food at Padilla’s is out of this world. Even the busser asked “You never been here before and you’re from Burque?”.. I had been missing out for a long time.

I go with the “Thursday Special”. And folks, let me tell you, these are the best carnitas and chile I’ve ever had in my life. The meat is tender and chewy, and the papas are a perfect blend of spices and flavors. And the green chile? Oh, man. It’s like a reunion party in your mouth. A nostalgic throwback to when you were a kid eating your grandma’s cooking. It’s got just the right amount of kick to it, without being too overpowering. It’s a real masterpiece.

Brixens 10/10 Review

Summer of 2017; I was downtown late at night. The building on the southwest corner of Central and 4th was lit-up after being dark for months. I could see into it through a gap in the window covers made of newspaper. There were people in there sweeping, moving things around, and putting things up. I had seen painters and other handymen during the day but it was almost midnight; it couldn’t be a construction crew. For weeks, I saw that building light up late at night. Best Barbacoa in ABQ “Barbacoa El Primo”

It’s not boastful for El Primo to claim that his barbacoa is “Simplemente la Mejor” which means “Simply the Best”. He’s only stating the obvious. He’s just saying what everybody is thinking. If you’ve never had barbacoa before, you probably don’t understand how large of a claim this is. Barbacoa is a slow-cooked tender beef with a lot of flavor and a lot of fat. Essentially any barbacoa that you get at a restaurant is pre-made frozen or refrigerated but Barbacoa is like pizza; Even if it’s bad, it’s still pretty good. El primo makes their barbacoa in-house using a special recipe and it is especially tender and flavorful. In fact, it is not an exaggeration to say that basically every restaurant in town serves a breakfast burrito of some kind. However, Blake’s, Golden Pride, and Twisters are the most commercially successful and well-known burrito places in town so you can say I’m on a quest to find la creme du la creme of burritos.
