Most Energetic Rock Duo in ABQ

The Talking Hours Album Release Show at Sister

One of the many reasons I have a love/hate relationship with Downtown ABQ is that we are a small enough town that you can run into people you know every weekend. It can be good or it can be bad. Thankfully, it was G O O D last night. I ran into The Talking Hours’ album release show! I was walking by Sister bar on Central, I wasn’t going to go in because I was headed to Burt’s Tiki Lounge to meet up with friends but I saw the event schedule by Sister’s front door it said, “THE TALKING HOURS 11:11-12:12”. I was just in time to catch the entire show. My friends had to wait.

If you’ve never seen The Talking Hours (TH) perform, best I can do to describe it is “Energy”. As in “mass times the speed of light squared”. You will never see a more energetic hard-rock duo in the entire state of New Mexico. Even if you don’t particularly enjoy their signature genre for some reason (you’re weird) you won’t be able to look away from their live performance. Mo throws his head back aggressively enough to break walls but then brings the energy down and gives the audience looks that make the young girls swoon. Karie’s drum face peers through her drum hair and probably scares the hell out of even the meanest guy in the bar. However, during the in-between-song-chatter, their everyday persona comes back and reveals two very funny, and kind individuals. Then, after a few words from Mo and Karie, the music starts again and we’re back to having the hairs on our neck trying to tear themselves off at the follicle.

“hair on my neck trying to tear itself off at the follicle”

Karie’s Electronic drum sounds and Loops from a drum machine, Mo’s heavenly pedal rig and deep, crushing bass tones are a staple of their sound and has been since the 2016 release if their EP “The Talking Hours”.  They ended the show with Mo leaving his bass playing a note and leaning it on his amp letting it feedback as he walks backstage. Karie leaves a loop on repeat and drops her sticks on the floor like a mic drop and heads backstage. The crowd cheers and claps. After a few moments, Mo comes back out and gestures “just kidding” with his hand. The crowd laughs. They turn off their gear and the show is over. There was a great turn out and reportedly sold about 20 vinyl copies of their album including some presales. I can confirm that number because I saw at least 16 people holding an album in their hand. When I asked them how they think it went, they said they feel it was a “pretty successful night”. I agree.
